8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball or Mixed: Picking Your Division Night
Choose the game you like to play, then the night your week can actually hold.

After you decide to play league pool, two questions come up fast: which game, and which night? DMV-USA Pool League runs 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball and mixed 8-ball/10-ball divisions across the DMV, from Sunday afternoons to Friday evenings. Picking well comes down to matching the game to what you enjoy and the night to what your week can hold.
What each game asks of you
A little general pool craft first. 8-ball is the bar game most people grew up on: you shoot solids or stripes, then the 8. It rewards patterns, patience and safety play, because a missed shot can leave the other player a table full of options.
9-ball is rotation. You hit the lowest numbered ball first and win by legally pocketing the 9. It's quick, it leans on the break, and a good player can finish a rack in a few shots. 10-ball is cousins with it, with a rack of ten balls and a call-your-shot rule. A lucky pocket doesn't count, which makes it less forgiving and more about choosing the right shot.
Mixed divisions pair 8-ball and 10-ball. If you like both games, or you can't decide, that is the night built for you.
If you're newer, 8-ball is the easy start
Many players begin with 8-ball because the rules feel familiar. Monday has Street Lights Billiards Academy in Annandale, VA at 6:30pm. Tuesday has Continental Pool Lounge in Arlington, Breakers Sky Lounge in Herndon and Center Pocket in Bowie, MD, all at 7:00pm. Wednesday has First Break Sports Lounge in Sterling, Revolution Darts & Billiards in Springfield and BAK Room Billiards Studio in Lorton, all at 7:00pm.
Thursday offers First Break Sports Lounge in Sterling, Q Billiards Sports Bar in Manassas and On Cue Sports Bar & Grill in Front Royal, at 7:00pm. Friday has Heavy Hitters Bar & Grill in Charlotte Hall, MD at 7:00pm. Q Ball Cafe in Fredericksburg also runs an 8-ball ladies' league on alternating Mondays at 7:00pm, and Breakers Sky Lounge has a monthly ladies' league on Sundays at 1:00pm.
9-ball and 10-ball nights
9-ball has fewer rooms, so the choice is simpler. On Tuesdays, On Cue Sports Bar & Grill in Front Royal and Q Billiards Sports Bar in Manassas both play at 7:00pm. On Wednesdays, Breakers Sky Lounge in Herndon plays at 6:30pm and Continental Pool Lounge in Arlington at 7:00pm.
10-ball has the widest spread of towns and days, so it's the game to look at if you want a night that isn't Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Monday: First Break Sports Lounge (Sterling, VA), American Legion Post 206 (Chesapeake Beach, MD), Cambridge Elks Lodge (Cambridge, MD) and Astro Beer Hall (Arlington, VA), all at 7:00pm.
- Tuesday: The Corner Pocket in Williamsburg, VA at 6:00pm.
- Thursday: Continental Pool Lounge in Arlington, VA at 7:00pm.
- Friday: Brews & Cues on the Boulevard in Glen Burnie, MD at 7:00pm.
- Sunday: Center Pocket in Bowie, MD at 2:00pm, and QBall Cafe in Fredericksburg, VA at 12:30pm on alternating Sundays.
Mixed and two-game nights
Action Lounge and Billiards in Leonardtown, MD runs 8B/10B mixed on Tuesdays at 7:00pm and plays 8-ball and 10-ball on Mondays at 6:00pm. Revolution Darts & Billiards in Fairfax, VA has an 8-ball and 10-ball night on Wednesdays at 7:00pm, and Breakers Sky Lounge in Herndon has one on Thursdays at 7:00pm. Breakers also runs a Monday 8B/10B mixed night at 7:00pm for the Platinum and Silver level.
Pick the night, then the game
Also think about how you like to compete. If you enjoy long, tactical games where one smart safety wins a rack, 8-ball will suit you. If you like a clean run and a fast pace, look at 9-ball. If you want to be rewarded for picking the hard shot and calling it, 10-ball is the game. Nobody is locked in, and plenty of players try a different game in a later session.
Most people do this backward, choosing the game they'd like and then fighting their calendar for 15 or 16 weeks. Start with the night you can make nearly every week and the drive you'll actually do after work. Then choose among the rooms that match. A decent match on a night you can keep beats a perfect game on a night you miss.
Every division uses Fargo ratings to handicap the matches, so a newer shooter isn't thrown in against a stronger one on even terms. That holds whichever game you choose.
The divisions page lists every night, venue and start time in one place. If you're stuck between two, call 321-604-1192 and a league operator can talk it through.

A Fargo number turns a mismatch into a match, and it also sets the ceiling for what a team roster can carry.
